The name Cambridge summons
breathtaking images – King’s
College Chapel, punting on the river Cam and of course the calm of the
historic college buildings plus a wide range of attractions, museums, restaurants
and pubs. Situated in the heart of East Anglia, this historic city is well
served by rail, airports, and motorways giving easy access to London, the
Midlands and the South East. With its winding streets and splendid architecture
Cambridge has plenty to offer any time of the year and is ideal for a day
trip or a weekend break. The City is the perfect destination for relaxing,
punting on the river Cam, shopping, wine tasting or simply unwinding in a
village pub. Cambridge still has the atmosphere of a bustling market town,
and this can be sampled on a walking tour, with one of the many specialist
Guides, visiting the Colleges and historic buildings.
Top attractions include King’s
College Chapel, Fitzwilliam Museum, University
Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Folk Museum, Kettles
Yard art collection, Riverboat
Georgina luxury cruises, Wimpole Hall, Home Farm, Gardens & Park,
Arrington, Anglesey Abbey, Gardens & Lode Mill, Lode, and the more formal
gardens of the University
Botanic Garden. ( The University
Botanic Gardens welcome more visitors than ever before to their 40 acres
of beautiful landscapes and from 2005 offer free admission for children. Visitor
numbers were boosted by the rare flowering of the spectacular Titan Arum in
September 2004, which attracted over 10,000 visitors in just four days. The
extraordinary and elegant unfurling of the gigantic flower can still be viewed
as a timelapse video on the Garden’s website at www.botanic.cam.ac.uk
).
Cambridge is also an ideal centre for visiting the surrounding countryside
and attractions, racegoers may visit nearby Newmarket, the home of British
horseracing and the National
Horseracing Museum, or you may prefer a short drive to the small fenland
market town of Ely with the magnificent Ely
Cathedral, the picture postcard village of Grantchester located just outside
Cambridge, or the Imperial
War Museum, Duxford. Be prepared to extend your short weekend break to
a longer Cambridge holiday!
